Avocado Natto Rice Bowl Directions

  • Prepare Fresh Ingredients
    Cut 1 ripe avocado in half, remove the pit, and scoop out the flesh. Cut into bite-sized cubes about 1/2-inch in size. The avocado should be perfectly ripe - soft enough to be creamy but firm enough to maintain its shape when mixed.
  • Mix Natto Properly
    Open 2 packages of natto (fermented soybeans). Using the chopsticks typically included in the package, mix the beans vigorously for about 50 strokes until they develop their characteristic stickiness. Add any seasoning packets that came with the natto and mix thoroughly.
  • Create Special Sauce
    In a small bowl, combine 1 teaspoon gochujang (Korean chili paste), 1 tablespoon mentsuyu (concentrated soup base), 1 teaspoon water, 1 teaspoon sugar, and a few drops of sesame oil. Mix until the sugar dissolves completely. This creates a balanced sauce with sweet, savory, and spicy elements.
  • Assemble The Bowl
    Divide freshly cooked hot rice between two bowls. Place the cubed avocado and prepared natto side by side on top of the rice, keeping them separate rather than mixing them together. This preserves the distinct textures and makes for a more attractive presentation.
  • Finish With Sauce
    Drizzle the prepared sauce over the avocado and natto. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds for added texture and nutty flavor. Serve immediately while the contrast between hot rice and toppings is at its peak.
